Sustainable City - Geneva, Switzerland
Posted in Models by fedwards on July 1st, 2007
Following World Environment Day, 5 June, 2007, a publication and website (http://www.partnerships4planet.ch/) has been launched to celebrate Geneva’s role in urban sustainable development. The publication has been produced by the Swiss Government, in partnership with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), the United Nations Environment Programme and IUCN - all based in the Geneva area.
Partnerships for the Planet: Stories from Geneva provides an overview of the concrete results of the alliances, partnerships and initiatives of the people leading sustainable development. Swiss President Micheline Calmy-Rey, states that, “International Geneva is the birthplace of the concept of sustainable development” on the site. She notes the symbolism of the 2007 Global Compact Leaders’ Summit meeting in the place that 20 years before gave home to the groundbreaking Brundtland Commission on Environment and Development.
The booklet also looks at the links between these organizations and the local community and the future of Geneva. Sustainable development and the environment are among the key priority areas for action by the Swiss government. The others are peace, security and disarmament; humanitarian affairs and human rights; health; and labor, economics, trade and science.
