Dongtan Eco-city is proclaimed to be the first sustainable city in the world! Currently in the design phase, the first phase of construction is due to be completed in 2010. The development is being undertaken by Arup and strategic partner, Shanghai Industrial Investment Corporation. Situated on an island off the coast of Shanghai at the mouth of the Yangtse river, Dongtan will be developed on 630 hectares of land and is expected to house both commercial and leisure investments, including urban and ecological parks and world class leisure facilities. The city is designed to be as carbon neutral as possible within economic constraints and will include features such as water catchment and purification, community waste management and combined heat and energy systems. Peter Head, Director of Arup, stated that:
"Our appointment sends out a clear message that the Chinese Government is willing to find ways of overcoming the challenges of creating sustainable cities in the face of significant climate change, environmental pollution, water shortages and the need for the use of cleaner energy".
