List of Sustainable Cities

Sustainable Cities refers to cities around the world who are actively making changes to become more sustainable. By recognising the interest, motivations, models of these cities we hope to encourage others to also make such changes. If you would like to tell the world about what your city is doing to achieve urban sustainability and would like to add your city to this Sustainable Cities list please do so by making a post on the site.     Australia and Pacific

  • Adelaide, South Australia The Adelaide Green City Sector Agreement (the Agreement) is a partnership between the Adelaide City Council and the State Government to develop and brand Adelaide as an environmentally sustainable and climate change resilient city.
  • Auckland, New Zealand The Auckland Sustainable Cities Programme was set up in the Auckland region as a three-year trial programme, running from mid 2003 to mid 2006. It has concluded as scheduled.
  • Ballarat, Victoria BREAZE is a locally formed group of energetic, forward thinking people who believe that there are more sustainable ways of living on our patch of the planet.
  • Maleny, Australia Sustainable Maleny Project: taking locally-focused action on Climate Change and Peak Oil.
  • Melbourne, Australia
  • Mount Alexander Sustainability Group, Australia The Sustainability Group has over 1000 voting members: local people taking action to combat climate change. We employ four staff, supported by volunteers at the MASG office in Castlemaine, central Victoria.
  • Wellington, New Zealand To utilise the communication and information sharing potential of the Internet to promote and facilitate sustainable development in Wellington, New Zealand.

  • San Francisco, USA A collection of visionary environmental professionals who are dedicated to helping all San Francisco residents and businesses take an active role in protecting and enhancing their urban environment.
  • San Jose, California Since 1994, the City of San Jose has an adopted Major Strategy within our General Plan to become a Sustainable City. The available document and executive summary outlines the progress that San Jose has made to date in accomplishing that strategy.

  • Vancouver, Canada The Sustainability Group is a branch of the City of Vancouver whose work focuses on climate protection, green building and bringing sustainability to all aspects of running and building the city, seeking out new ideas and new ways of doing things.
