Predit: research, experimentation and innovation

This information is part of research into case studies provided by Liz Boulton, Logistick, at the recent Sustainable Freight Seminar.

Predit is a French programme of research, experimentation and innovation in land transport, started by the ministries in charge of research, transport, environment and industry. It is not so much a case study as a methodology or a project management system.

Tripsense Pay-as-You-Drive car insurance

With “Pay as You Go” ™ drivers can purchase cover as and when they need it – and then switch it off when it is not required. While the scheme doesn’t offer extra discounts for “greener” vehicles, it may help to reduce unnecessary car trips, and can play a role in an integrated transport strategy.

HomeZones Community Streetscapes

MagLev Trains

A maglev, or magnetically levitating, train is a form of transportation that suspends, guides and propels vehicles (predominantly trains) using electromagnetic force. This method has the potential to be fast and quiet when compared to wheeled mass transit systems, potentially reaching velocities comparable to turboprop and jet aircraft (900 km/h, 600 mph).

Velib’ Public Bicycles

Vélib’ (“vélo libre” or “vélo liberté”, free bicycle or bicycle freedom) is a public bicycle rental programme in Paris, France. Velib’ creates a convenient way to use a low energy intensive mode of transport, accessible at short notice and for short periods.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses

When used in fuel cells, hydrogen produces no pollutants with the only emissions being water and heat. This type of engine has the potential to reduce greenhouse emissions under conditions where the hydrogen would be flared (burned) as a waste product.

Creative Communities

Amongst other initiatives, Creative Communities is an organisation that has encouraged street reclamation and social community activism. Their approach is used in many cities around the world – it is useful to any urban neighbourhood where cars are seen as a problem.

Freight Systems: ChronoCity

ChronoCity is a parcel-delivery service in Strasbourg that uses electric-powered handcarts for the routes through the inner-city, combining a consolidation hub with “clean” vehicle use.

Freight Systems: DHL Packstations

This information is part of research into case studies provided by Liz Boulton, Logistick, at the recent Sustainable Freight Seminar.

DHL Packstations are a response to the changing needs of consumers. Recipients nominate where they would like to pick up parcels and over-sized letters, and retrieve the delivery from an automated booth after being notified by sms or email.
