Freight Systems: EuroTunnel Check-In System

Posted in Models, RDAG by Kate Archdeacon on November 18th, 2008

This information is part of research into case studies provided by Liz Boulton, Logistick, at the recent Sustainable Freight Seminar.

Business-driven innovation contributes to eco-footprint reduction and improved consumer experience.

An innovative auto check-in system for trucks loading onto the EuroTunnel freight train has reduced check in time to about 30 seconds. The system automatically detects tractor registration number and vehicle length, reducing the check-in process to a simple 7-step process, after which the drivers relax in a lounge cabin.

The result is a more efficient train-loading system that improves efficiency, increases schedule capacity and reduces stress on truck drivers. In terms of sustainability, any innovation that encourages a shift from road to rail for freight will reduce congestion, pollution and stress, and improve fuel-use efficiency. The interesting aspect of this system is the improvement of conditions for the users – making freight sustainable for the drivers (providers) as well.
